What's changed

Designed specifically for registered Class 1 building inspectors who previously worked unsupervised before April 2024 on any project type and who are now considering registering at a higher Class, and all other Registered building inspectors from Class 2A - F who are seeking to keep their competency knowledge up to date.

This programme provides a technical overview of the key changes to building control introduced by the Building Safety Act 2022. It covers the new dutyholder and competence requirements, updated application routes (including applications for approval with full plans, statutory consultations and the Building Safety Levy), and clarifies the main notification stages and information to be provided to the local authority (for example, commencement and fire safety information), alongside the building control authority’s powers to require reasonable tests.

The course takes a technical look at recent and emerging changes to Schedule 1 and Approved Documents B, L, M, R and T, together with the updated version of BS 9991, other associated guidance such as the Approved Documents FAQs, and the Future Homes Standard. It also explores updated enforcement powers and the appeals process, the transition from Approved Inspectors to Registered Building Control Approvers, and the handling of initial notices.

We worked with accreditation bodies to develop a unique Level 6 qualification for people managing the enforcement process to ensure public safety.

Our course is for managers, team leaders or surveyors in building control who have responsibility for, or carry out, enforcement. It's not about management and legislation, it’s about sharing our knowledge and experience in our core role of protecting the public. We’ll look at inspection and enforcement processes including:

  • legal action (formal court action, PACE interviews, witness statements, evidence, monitoring reports)
  • risk assessments
  • lone working policies
  • emergency planning
  • staff development
  • actions proportionate to the risks presented

We worked with accreditation bodies to develop a unique Level 6 qualification that explores the roles and responsibilities of those involved in ensuring the fire safety of a building from inception to demolition. We focus specifically on both existing and new buildings without being restricted exclusively by the definition of a higher risk building given in the Building Safety Act and associated regulations, and therefore consider a variety of increasingly complex buildings.

This Level 6 qualification is a recognised pathway to independent competency validation.

Lectures take place within the eleven teaching weeks we'll host an afternoon workshop where you'll discuss complex case studies with expert guest speakers and your peers.

It would be beneficial for you to attend all of the afternoon, and this is our recommendation as the opportunity to discuss and debate the subject of the day is invaluable; however, if you do miss any due to work commitments, you'll be able to catch up in your own time as all workshops will be recorded. There isn’t an exam for this qualification, you'll have a few weeks’ break following your last workshop, after which time your assignment will be due. In the unlikely event you refer on your first attempt at your assignment, you'll have two more attempts to pass.

This qualification requires the use of a wide range of sources to develop and expand your knowledge base and evidence your detailed understanding of the subject matter.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

"The breadth of the course content has been good in enabling the provision of complex information in sensible blocks of learning."

"I have vastly increased my knowledge of fire safety over the last 11 weeks, this course was more than a refresher course I have learnt much more specific areas of fire safety. The weekly presentations were very informative and detailed from materials testing to firefighting processes and procedures, most of which I was not knowledgeable about at the start of the course. The weekly specialist speakers were very informative and presented their content well. The course was very intensive taking a lot of home time working, difficult to do when we are all fully employed with busy weekly workloads. But the course was very advantageous for the preparation of the Specialist surveyor validation exam. The website site set up was very impressive and user friendly in my view including to be able to return to the specific areas of course content is very beneficial to recap specific areas of knowledge. This is most useful for work and for the upcoming validation exams. All in all Trevor delivered the course very well it was a success and very beneficial to a qualified building control surveyor."

"Thanks Trevor and all, has really helped me to feel more confident in my approach."

"The course has expanded my knowledge of ADB and the BS 999 range of documents. Very informative course which has greatly improved my fire safety knowledge and experience to progress in the workplace."

"Overall, to date, I am extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to be on the course and it is definitely a worthwhile exercise and I wish this had been available to me years ago."
