This practical, half day course serves as a good introductory or refresher session for anyone in the construction industry who requires a basic understanding of the Building Regulations and Building Act and how they work in practice. It takes the mystery and confusion out of the Building Control system, explains in clear terms what legislation is involved, when Building Regulations notification is needed and what to expect in practice. This course will give you an overview of the Building Control process and practices and implications for clients, designers and contractors.

This course covers common foundation types used today on both residential and commercial properties including the range of foundations available from simple trench fill foundations through to piling and ground beams. Delegates will learn about the design of simply supported basic structural elements, timber floor joists and steel beams over openings. The course will include an exercise based on a domestic extension that looks at loading, bending moments and shear forces, steel beams, floor joists and associated elements.
CPD: This course counts for 3 hours CPD.
Cost: Days 1 & 2 cost £85+VAT per day. You will need to book each part separately using the links at the bottom of this page.

- Design of simply supported steel beams including worked example and practice session

- Brief recap on the loading and structural analysis from Day 1
- Design of timber floors including worked example and practice session
- Structural alterations of domestic properties
Over the two days, the delegates will gain an understanding of:
- Types and application of design loads on simple structures.
- Simple structural analysis of simple structures
- Basic elemental designs – steel, timber, masonry and foundations.
- Structural alterations of domestic properties making reference to various clauses in Building Regulations where applicable.

This course outlines the relevant sections of the Building Act 1984, together with the service of the various notices and procedures involved, including requisition for information, Types of notices and methods of service, injunctions and power to enter premises. Delegates will gain an overview of what is essential for them to effectively discharge their duties under the Building Act and ensure public safety. They will gain an understanding of the various procedures involved in dealing with dangerous structures from the most basic garden walls to large buildings that pose a threat to public safety.
