This course is designed to provide anyone involved in the design, checking, implementation and inspection of foundations, ground works and ground floor slabs with the basic knowledge necessary to perform their role with confidence. We will look at relevant sections of the Building Act 1984, Part A of the Building Regulations, British Standards and Codes of Practice, different materials and systems, ground conditions, soil types and characteristics and what to do when building near trees.  Delegates will gain knowledge and understanding of the various requirements, materials, procedures and good practice involved in foundations and ground works. It is aimed at all building control professionals, designers, contractors and site managers who require a basic understanding of the principles and practices of foundations and groundworks.

Please note: This course is split over two half days. Part 1 can be booked as a stand alone course but if you wish to attend Part 2 you must have attended Part 1. If you wish to book Parts 1 and 2 you will need to make a separate booking for each day.

CPD: Parts 1 & 2 count for 3 hours of CPD each.

Cost: Parts 1 & 2 will cost £80.00 + VAT each per delegate. You will need to book each part separately using the links at the bottom of this page.

Platform: This course will be held via Zoom. Part 1 & 2 will run for 3.5 hours including time for breaks.

John Patch

John runs his own Business Development Consultancy, TeamPatch Ltd. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers with over 46 years of construction experience, predominantly relating to new-build residential, commercial and industrial foundations and the repair of failed foundations, mainly on domestic properties. His experience of underpinning houses makes him an expert in the art of getting foundations right, particularly when more and more UK housing sites, including self-build sites, are either second-hand, brownfield sites or have poor quality ground conditions.

 

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers with over 46 years of construction experience

For local authority managers with a new responsibility for building control.

This course is aimed at managers who are about to, or have recently taken on responsibility for a building control team. It is designed to explain the different roles and responsibilities under the Building Act 1984 and to prepare managers for their role as head of a key service.

This course will help managers prepare their surveyors to make informed judgments, assessments and formulate plans to deal with dangerous structures, thus preparing them to cope with major incidents. We aim to enable managers to assess their service to determine if they have all the key personnel, tools and procedures in place for every eventuality. In doing so will help to reduce risks by improving skills, knowledge and understanding of how the different legislation and agencies work together to deliver a safe built environment.

CPD: This course counts for 6 hours CPD.

Cost: £150 + VAT including lunch and course materials.

Doug Basen - LABC

Doug Basen

Doug has spent the majority of his working life within the building control environment and is a staunch advocate of LABC. He has served as President of the District Surveyors Association (DSA), and was Chairman of LABC Services for 4 years. Doug's last job in local government was with Gateshead Council where he was employed as the Housing Renewal and Building Control Manager between April 2004, and January 2011, His work there involved management of the Building Control service and a Private Sector Housing Team, covering a wide range of work on private sector housing initiatives relating to housing market renewal projects. Doug joined LABC as Head of Technical and Practice Communications February 2011 and supports members and customers nationwide.
