The CIOB Level 3 Certificate in Technical Support for Public Service Building Standards is designed for building control administrative staff dealing with the building control function on a day to day basis. This qualification develops the learner’s knowledge and skills to process the workload of the building control team correctly in line with statutory timescales, delivery and performance standards. Students will also understand the importance of their role and how information is conveyed to users of the service.

All learning, lectures and assignments will take place via distance learning on the LABC Virtual Learning Environment. You will have access to the course on the VLE approximately one week before the course start date.

  • For each unit, participants are required to complete an online assignment that is assessed on a pass/fail criteria. Assignments will need to be completed by the end of each Unit.
  • We recommend a minimum 140 hours self study for this qualification.
  • Entry Requirements: GCSE English and Maths or equivalent OR Relevant building control administration experience
  • Progression to other qualifications: The Level 3 certificate programme provides the underpinning knowledge and understanding for entry to the Level 4 Diploma in Building Control Surveying. Higher Education providers may consider these qualifications for entry to appropriate degree programmes.

This half day session is aimed at those new to building control management, with or without a building control background or those just wishing to refresh their existing knowledge.

A truly essential course for anyone who is new to the challenge of managing a building control team or is likely to do so in the future.

This course will help delegates better understand their position within the organisation, budgets and team management, co-operation with stakeholders, the LABC Quality Management system, as well as building professional relationships.

This is a busy and thought provoking day which is designed to support those new to management, reinforce the skills of those with experience an encourage networking and the use of LABC resources.

CPD: This course counts for 3 hours CPD.

This course will give an overview of the building regulation requirements that building professionals need a solid understanding of.

It will look at the application of fire safety principles to building work and the various approaches to demonstrate compliance. It will also discuss principles that can be used to vary guidance but maintain the necessary performance standard.

This course is designed to provide anyone involved in the design, checking, implementation and inspection of foundations, ground works and ground floor slabs with the basic knowledge necessary to perform their role with confidence. We will look at relevant sections of the Building Act 1984, Part A of the Building Regulations, British Standards and Codes of Practice, different materials and systems, ground conditions, soil types and characteristics and what to do when building near trees.  Delegates will gain knowledge and understanding of the various requirements, materials, procedures and good practice involved in foundations and ground works. It is aimed at all building control professionals, designers, contractors and site managers who require a basic understanding of the principles and practices of foundations and groundworks.

Please note: This course is split over two half days. Part 1 can be booked as a stand alone course but if you wish to attend Part 2 the trainer does recommend you attended Part 1 first. If you wish to book Parts 1 and 2 you will need to make a separate booking for each day.

CPD: Parts 1 & 2 count for 3 hours of CPD each.

The Level 6 Safety and Sports Grounds and other Public Events qualification has been designed in partnership with the Sports Grounds Safety Authority. This unique Level 6 Certificate is aimed at mid-career public officials and other professionals who are involved in regulating public safety at sports grounds and other public events.

The course is made up of online learning modules, case studies, real-life job role activities and live interactive online lectures delivered by expert guest speakers and facilitated by the course lead. It aims to develop the individual’s ability to appraise the physical structure, undertake inspections, and navigate complex safety issues to ensure compliance with legislation for a range of public entertainment venues.

The course specifically covers:

  • The roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in ensuring safety in event management
  • How to comply with legislation and application in relation to Safety at Sports Grounds and other public events
  • How to appraise the physical structure of a premise for a range of events
  • The range of complex dynamic factors that can impact the safety of events
  • How to be able to make decisions on the suitability of an event

Live interactive workshops and tutor support days will take place one day a week for 13 weeks*. Although we recommend that you attend all the live sessions we understand that may not always be possible due to work commitments. Therefore LABC will make online learning available before the live workshop days for those who are unable to attend the live sessions. The live sessions will also be recorded so that you can catch up on any sessions you missed. After your last workshop you'll have a study break before the Unit's assessment is due.
