The Challenges of Raising Standards and Delivering Effective Building Control

The LABC Annual Member Conference will be returning to Jury's Inn Hinckley Island on 23 and 24 March 2020.

Public service building control is at the centre of strategic changes. It’s not just the Building Safety Regime implementing Hackitt. The ‘climate emergency’, Parts L and F and the review of new homes standards will be creating new demands and challenges for how we deliver building control in practice. We are being told by officials to expect radical changes in the building control system and the anticipation of measurable outputs. Local authorities will have to address building control as a strategic service and reconsider its status, resourcing, recruitment, training and staff retention. LABC will have to reflect changes and new demands in what we deliver to support growth, professionalism, provable competency and consistent delivery of compliance.

This 2-day conference will have three streams:

  1. Change and development within the LABC network, between regions and the Nations and within LABC itself
  2. Best practices and raising our game in delivering a measurable compliance service
  3. Understanding and contributing to regulatory changes that will raise standards in fire risk, energy conservation, ventilation and inclusive design

The three streams will be debated and evidenced by leading external speakers through keynote sessions and panel discussions. The focus will be technical, practical and about future practice. MHCLG is expected to contribute to the event.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Peter Baker, Director, HSE Building Safety Programme Response
  • Nick Coombe, National Fire Chiefs Council
  • Melissa Dillon
  • Chandru Dissanayeke, MHCLG
  • Phil Hammond, LABC
  • Victoria Hills, RTPI

* IMPORTANT NOTICE *
Please be aware of the following steps prior to booking onto the course:
Step 1 - Complete the following application form - CIOB Application Form - Level 6 Fire Safety in Complex Buildings
Step 2 - The tutor will review and a coordinator will confirm course suitability
Step 3 - Book onto the course

We worked with accreditation bodies to develop a unique Level 6 qualification that explores the roles and responsibilities of those involved in ensuring the fire safety of a building from inception to demolition. We focus specifically on both existing and new buildings without being restricted exclusively by the definition of a higher risk building given in the Building Safety Act and associated regulations, and therefore consider a variety of increasingly complex buildings.

This Level 6 qualification is a recognised pathway to independent competency validation.

Lectures take place within the eleven teaching weeks we'll host an afternoon workshop where you'll discuss complex case studies with expert guest speakers and your peers.

It would be beneficial for you to attend all of the afternoon, and this is our recommendation as the opportunity to discuss and debate the subject of the day is invaluable; however, if you do miss any due to work commitments, you'll be able to catch up in your own time as all workshops will be recorded. There isn’t an exam for this qualification, you'll have a few weeks’ break following your last workshop, after which time your assignment will be due. In the unlikely event you refer on your first attempt at your assignment, you'll have two more attempts to pass.

This qualification requires the use of a wide range of sources to develop and expand your knowledge base and evidence your detailed understanding of the subject matter.

STUDENT FEEDBACK

"The breadth of the course content has been good in enabling the provision of complex information in sensible blocks of learning."

"I have vastly increased my knowledge of fire safety over the last 11 weeks, this course was more than a refresher course I have learnt much more specific areas of fire safety. The weekly presentations were very informative and detailed from materials testing to firefighting processes and procedures, most of which I was not knowledgeable about at the start of the course. The weekly specialist speakers were very informative and presented their content well. The course was very intensive taking a lot of home time working, difficult to do when we are all fully employed with busy weekly workloads. But the course was very advantageous for the preparation of the Specialist surveyor validation exam. The website site set up was very impressive and user friendly in my view including to be able to return to the specific areas of course content is very beneficial to recap specific areas of knowledge. This is most useful for work and for the upcoming validation exams. All in all Trevor delivered the course very well it was a success and very beneficial to a qualified building control surveyor."

"Thanks Trevor and all, has really helped me to feel more confident in my approach."

"The course has expanded my knowledge of ADB and the BS 999 range of documents. Very informative course which has greatly improved my fire safety knowledge and experience to progress in the workplace."

"Overall, to date, I am extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to be on the course and it is definitely a worthwhile exercise and I wish this had been available to me years ago."
